I have taken both cartridges out and then put them back in, I have turned off the printer and then turned it back on Then, and only then will the printer print my document--then it prints a diagnostic page.

I have cleaned and reinstalled both cartridges, which were printing just fine until this message suddenly appeared. How can I make it go away and return the printer to operation? I am not in the mood to buy new print cartridges just to see if that will fix the problem, then be stuck with them when I find out it's a fatal problem with the printer hardware.

In many cases, the only way to resolve a printhead failure is to replace the printhead, if it is replaceable. If the printhead is not replaceable, the entire printer must be replaced or serviced.

Step 1: Reset the printer Reset the printer to try and recover from printer failures. With the printer turned ondisconnect the power cord from the printer. Step 2: Identify your ink cartridges Follow the steps for the cartridges that most resemble your cartridges.

Step 3: Reseat the printhead up to three times You might need to reseat the printhead up to three times. With the printer turned onunplug the power cord from the rear of the printer.

Lift the carriage latch, slightly lift the printhead, lower the printhead back into the carriage, wiggle the printhead left and right, and then lower the carriage latch to lock the printhead into place. If the error message persists, repeat the steps to reseat the printhead up to three times. Step 4: Replace the printhead Replace the printhead. I've tried the removing cartridge solution and the message still appears. I tried cleaning them and then unplugging the power cord and it still shows the error message.

I've had the printer for about 4 months and because of moving house I've just started to try and use it. However, I still got the same message, so I cleaned the printer contacts with distilled water but still have the same issue. Welcome to HP Support Forums. Clean distilled water. Use bottled or filtered water if distilled water is not available. Tap water can contain contaminants that damage the ink cartridge. Clean cotton swabs or any soft, lint-free material that will not stick to the ink cartridges coffee filters work well. Do not leave the ink cartridges outside of the printer for more than 30 minutes. If the ink cartridge is outside of the printer for too long, the ink can dry and clog the nozzles.

Dip a clean foam-rubber swab or lint-free cloth into distilled water, and then squeeze any excess water from it.

Lightly moisten another cotton swab with distilled water, and then squeeze any excess water from the swab. Use the swab to clean the electrical contacts in the carriage, located inside the printer on the carriage slots. If you are still unable to print, repeat these steps to clean and reseat the ink cartridges.

Multiple cleanings might be necessary to restore printing. Press the Power button to turn on the product. With the product turned ondisconnect the power cord from the rear of the product. If the product does not turn on by itself, press the Power button to turn it on.

I cleaned the contacts 5 times yesterday and 5 times today without success. I also carried out the printer reset, the same amount of times, again without success.

I tried to print using just the colour and then just the balck ink cartridges but still no success. I still have the power button light flashing and the 'print cartridge s missing or not detected.

However, I purchased new genuine HP cartridges thinking they would solve the problem. This printer is a few years out of warranty so no chance of it being repaired cheaply.
