So I just bought a Gotek drive and am waiting for it to arrive. What's the best firmware and why? From what I can see, there's 3: - Cortex - FlashFloppy - HxC Cortex seems to get the thumbs down from everyone, and being unmaintained doesn't help, so I assume that's out. HxC looks like it has support for everything, but has a price tag attached.

Other than file format support, does one firmware have advantages over the other? Educate me and thanks! FF and HxC are pretty comparable in my experience of using both.

I use both on seperate goteks. Jeff has done fantastic work on hxc so I enjoy using it for the most part - however I also have a flash floppy gotek that comes in handy since I don't like to transplant my hxc gotek around when it's living in an Amiga I'm frequently messing with.

I also use an Atari st and Atari falcon and my flash floppy lives there most of the time. Originally Posted by solidcore. Both HxC and FlashFloppy are great. HxC has been around for longer and supports more machines at the moment. FlashFloppy is open source and free. Pick your poison, they're both great.

Jeff, stop being pissy. Find More Posts by Akira. I think it's going to be FlashFloppy right now. I really only need ADF support, and free is appealing to me. Originally Posted by Akira. If that's the case, is it possible to fool the hardware into thinking the HDF is just a huge floppy?

To boot from this i think that you need to patch the kickstart.

Very cool! Originally Posted by demolition. Is that a limitation set by the Gotek hardware or is that a firmware issue? Neither - but since the Gotek is connected to the floppy controller in the Amiga, the data speed will also be limited by what this controller can handle and it cannot go any faster than a regular floppy.

The main problem is that someone needs to write such a driver for the Amiga, and no one is going to do that.

Gotek Compatibility

This has been discussed before, FlashFloppy could also support such a thing if an Amiga-side driver existed. I can't moderate myself when i see some comments. This leads to very annoying feature of amiga scene. Everything should be free and if any one ask something from anything he is a villain. Issue — From Keir: The bootloader can get confused at power on and detect the wrong baud rate, so this is a way to reset it without reconnecting power and USB and upsetting the rest of the connection. Issue — from Squirrel in comments below: USB cable and hubs can cause issues with device recognition, perhaps due to power connection in USB cable.

Problem solved. Thanks to Squirrel for this one! Thanks for the excellent description. I was able to successfully repeat the procedure on my Gotek, which had been flashed previously with Cortex firmware ie. I cannot however say that it worked like a charm. It seems the drive is sensitive to its power supply. I measured the cable to make sure all conductors where connected 1-to-1 before plugging it in.

It was only then that I got the idea to use the 3rd connector on my cable. And hey presto! My drive was recognized, although still not as a DFU device. I hope my comments will help other people when they run into problems following this flashing guide.

The reason I had doubts is that in the past, I had similar problems flashing other devices, which could be solved by using the hub to force USB2. Thanks for this guide! I wanted to share my experience. I bought the cheapest Gotek on Amazon: less than 14 EUR shipped for a super-basic model that came with no display at all and no buttons. I put together an A-to-A cable, and set on to follow your instructions. My Win 7 could not install the drivers automatically, but those shipped with the ST software worked.

The first time I actually flashed the firmware, I was prompted if I wanted to remove the existing write protection of course I accepted. At the end of the process, I got a warning window with a bunch of info on it.GitHub is home to over 40 million developers working together to host and review code, manage projects, and build software together. Latest commit. The most unreliable part of the MSX is probably the floppy drive. The drives are getting old and unreliable. They can be replaced with pc drives but a nice alternative is a Gotek drive. The Gotek drive emulates an floppy drive. It connects to the floppy cable just like a regular pc floppy drive.

So if the MSX is able or converted to use pc floppy drives, it can also use the Gotek drive. Instead of floppies it uses a regular USB flash drive. By default the Gotek comes with 7 segment display on which you can see the number of the image selected with the buttons on the Gotek.

It is possible to replace this with a lcd or oled screen so you can see the filename of the image selected. It is also possible to connect a speaker to emulate the stepping motor sound for those who miss it. The standard firmware on the Gotek is not very useful, but luckily there are alternatives.

First there is the HXC firmware. Alternatively there is the open source FlashFloppy firmware. With the FlashFloppy firmware it is possible k and k dsk images directly from the USB flash drive. Because it connects to the floppy controller in the MSX is also emulates the actual speed of the floppy drive. This means it's pretty slow compared to using floppy images with a mass storage device like the MFR of Carnivore. However it is a lot cheaper and it also supports most perhaps all?

FlashFloppy firmware sounds very interesting to me Especially if it really can be used to play KB and KB DSK-files directly without need for renaming or converting, it seems well worth a try considering the price of the devices.

New version V Just tried it my self with flashfloppy V I realy don't see whats wrong. They seem to have the wrong mediacode. I had to guess which group it was, went and grabbed the binaries posted by Keir, and now I attach them here for everyone. Hopefully I can test this on the weekend!

Will have to test. Spo not sure if the firmware is currently fully compatible with Amiga and Atari ST selectors. I supply my own build of the amiga selector so please use that.
